The Bridgewater Blues Band

Gabor Bartos

I started my musical career in my native Hungary as a bass guitarist for a 60’s band but because the drummer left I sat in to play the drums, and I have been drumming ever since. Under the communist regime we had no access to electric guitars, so we made them: the guitar body from the top of school desk, the pickups were made up from telephone receiver magnets and the speakers were pinched from railway stations. Neither did we have any access to rock, or blues records. Radio was banned from playing “decadent Western music” the only way we could hear and learn these songs was when we went to the travelling fairgrounds and took our guitars and figured out the chords and the lyrics of those songs. I played in many bands in the Hungarian underground scene, and in a variety of bands from rock-gospel through blues to a psychedelic 60’s band, The Purple Gang, in England

Firstly influenced by Elvis, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Robert Johnson and Muddy Water. In later years I’ve been introduced to John Mayall’s music, which has “blown me away”. I am still influenced by his style and music and of course by the masters of the British blues scene Hendrix, Cream, Fleetwood Mac.and so on…
